Woodbury Common Premium Outlet Submits Plans for $250 Million Expansion

by M.C. Millman

The Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, which attracts millions of visitors worldwide annually to its over 250 retail stores and restaurants, plans to expand to attract additional tourism through a variety of improvements.

A draft supplemental environmental impact statement was submitted to the Village of Woodbury Planning Board as the first step of reviewing the proposal, which includes 155,000 gross square feet of new retail and restaurant space. Additionally, the request consists of 3,000 more parking spaces, which will be provided by adding a parking deck. A two-hundred-room hotel and 21,000 gross square feet of tenant storage space are under discussion. Enhancements included better crosswalks, walkways, children’s play area, and updated landscaping.

Built in 1985, Woodbury Common generates hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue and provides thousands of jobs.

The outlet provides five thousand full and part-time jobs. If the expansion plans pass, more than 3,000 new jobs will be created, between the construction jobs generated as well as the full and part-time jobs that will be needed once the expansion is finished.

The hoped-for $250 million in improvements will bring in substantial additional property and sales tax revenue from the outlet that already generates hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue. The tax revenue goes to the town and village of Woodbury, Orange County, the Monroe-Woodbury School District, the Metropolitan Transit Authority, and police services in Woodbury and New York State.
