Group of Bachurim Safe and Sound Following Scare at Harriman State Park

By YS GOLD

A group of bachurim from the Viznitzer Yeshiva Gedola spent Shabbos in Nyack, and stopped for a hike at Harriman State Park on the way home.

But the hike which is estimated to take around 90 minutes turned into a frightening four-hour ordeal.

At around 12:00, 55 boys and two staff members began the hike, but soon half the group and one staff member pulled ahead and became separated from the other half. After a while, they realized that the hike was taking far longer than estimated, and it became clear that they were lost.

Thankfully, they had cellphone service, and called Matzil, which alerted park rangers, Rockland chaverim, and Rockland Hatzoloh for assistance

Park rangers were the first to make contact with the two groups and guided them out of the park.

Matzil and chaverim headed into the park as well to provide water and electrolytes for the boys as their water supply had gone low.

The first group was brought out by park rangers together with matzil and the second group which was further in was brought out about a half hour later by chaverim of Rockland and park rangers.

All the boys were given water and shade to relax, and one boy was evaluated by Rockland Hatzoloh for symptoms of dehydration.

By late afternoon, all students and staff were safe and accounted for, thanks to the quick and professional work of various groups and agencies.

A father from one of the bocherim told Rockland daily I want to thank all the volunteers from Matzil chaverim and Hatzoloh for the assistance.
