Piermont Fire Department Rescues Hiker On Peanut Falls Trail
By Idy Perl
Yesterday afternoon the Piermont Fire Department was called to do a daring rescue for an injured hiker on the Peanut Falls Long Trail, on the Hudson River in the Palisades.
Multiple firefighters responded to the call via rescue boats on the Hudson River and entered the trail from the riverbed. They found the hiker around 300 feet up the mountainside from the water, and realized they would need more manpower to safely rescue him. They reached out to the Nyack and Tarrytown Fire Departments Rope Rescue Teams for more assistance.
By the time the additional fire units arrived, Piermont FD, with the help of EMTs, had transferred the patient into a stokes basket and were prepared to descent. They fire units all worked together to get him down the mountainside with a rope rescue, and were forced to change directions several times due to wet and slippery terrain.
After approximately three hours the patient was off the mountain and transferred via ambulance to Westchester Medical Center.
