Assemblyman Wieder: New York State Budget Secures Vital Funding for Orangetown and Ramapo

Assemblyman Wieder announced that the recently passed New York State budget includes significant funding and initiatives to support residents of Orangetown and Ramapo, addressing critical needs in infrastructure, environmental protection, childcare, education, tax relief, and public safety. The comprehensive spending plan, which Wieder supported, reflects the priorities voiced by constituents struggling to make ends meet while seeking enhanced state services.

“This budget is a win for our district,” Wieder said. “I’ve heard from families across Orangetown and Ramapo about the challenges they face, and I’m proud to have voted for a plan that invests in their future, from childcare and nutrition programs to safer roads and cleaner communities.”

Key Investments for the District

The final budget allocates substantial resources to improve local infrastructure and environmental sustainability. A $100 million increase to the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) will bolster maintenance of roads and highways statewide, directly benefiting the district’s commuters and businesses. Additionally, $200 million is dedicated to renewable energy programs, including municipal projects, while $400 million will fund the Environmental Protection Fund to conserve resources, mitigate extreme weather impacts, and combat air pollution.

“These investments ensure our roads are safe and our environment is protected for future generations,” Wieder noted. “From better highways to cleaner energy, we’re building a stronger foundation for our communities.”

Supporting Families and Youth

Recognizing the importance of families and youth to the district’s vibrancy, Wieder highlighted several family-focused budget provisions. A $50 million allocation will expand childcare subsidies for social service districts, ensuring more families can access affordable care. The budget also introduces the BABY benefit program, providing a one-time cash benefit to support residents after childbirth.

Education also sees a significant boost, with an additional $120 million for the state’s universal school meal program, bringing its total funding to $340 million. This expansion aims to ensure no child goes hungry at school, supporting both nutrition and academic success.

“Our kids and families are the heart of Orangetown and Ramapo,” Wieder said. “These programs give them the resources they need to thrive.”

Tax Relief and Public Safety

The budget includes measures to ease financial burdens and enhance safety. Changes to the School Tax Relief Program (STAR) will relax age and income requirements, making more homeowners eligible for tax relief. On public safety, Wieder emphasized the creation of a new state office for gun violence prevention, alongside funding for anti-gun violence grants and programming to address the growing public safety crisis.

“Families deserve to feel secure in their homes and communities,” Wieder said. “This budget tackles gun violence head-on while putting more money back in the pockets of hardworking homeowners.”

A Budget for the District

Wieder acknowledged the extensive budget process but expressed confidence that the final plan delivers for his constituents. “This spending plan works for Orangetown and Ramapo,” he said. “It addresses the real challenges our residents face, and I’ll keep fighting for their priorities in Albany.”
