Today In History: Trump Impeached For The First Time
By Idy Perl
On this date, December 18, in 2019, was the first time that the U.S House tried to impeach then-President Donald Trump. He was charged with abusing the power of the presidency to investigate Joe Biden ahead of the 2020 election, and then obstructing Congress’ investigation into the matter. This made Trump the third president in US history to be impeached.
The articles of impeachment went to the Senate and Trump was
acquitted on both accounts on February 5th.
This was the first of two impeachments that were brought
against Trump during his presidency, the second of which came in January 2021
after the January 6th Capitol riot.
