Stony Point Ambulance Corps has been awarded the prestigious EMS Provider of the Year Award by the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY).
Stony Point Ambulance Corp was chosen in recognition of their exceptional bravery and commitment during a critical incident that took place on July 9, 2023, during a severe storm with 6-9 inches of rain that fell within three hours as reported by Rockland Daily here.
When the Stony Point Ambulance Corps received a call from hikers lost in Bear Mountain, the ambulance corp came to the rescue with three ambulances despite the hazardous driving conditions, which included washed-out roads. EMTs Darren Cupo, William Delahanty, Vincent Orfini, and Training Officer Evan Humphrey led the initial response. Lieutenant Gianna Punzi, EMT Tara Bertellino, Allison Spong, and driver Kenneth Hoyt formed additional teams.
The teams were first able to rescue a 10-year-old, followed by the father, who was in critical condition and had to be rescued via a rope system and attended to during the descent from the mountain and without access to advanced life support. Nine other stranded hikers were rescued by Stony Point Ambulance Corp EMTs and brought to a nearby hotel for shelter for the storm's duration.
