Senator Bill Weber Speaks Up Against Assisted Suicide Bill

By Idy Perl

On Monday, the New York State Senate passed an assisted suicide bill, officially known as the Medical Aid in Dying Act, by a vote of 35 to 27. This bill would allow physicians to medically assist terminally ill patients who are believed to have less than six months left to live and want to end their life early.

Senator Bill Weber spoke out against the bill and expressed his concerns for how the bill could potentially harm those patients and their families.

"I am very concerned with the dangerous road that we are going down potentially today," Senator Weber said during the Senate hearing. "I rise not in anger but in sorrow, sorrow for where we are headed if we allow for the proposed assisted suicide bill to become law in this state."

Six New York State Senate Democrats joined the Republican senators to vote against the bill, which still passed and now goes to Governor Hochul to either be signed into law or vetoed. Senator Weber urges his constituents to call Governor Hochul's office at 518-474-8390 to respectfully ask her not to sign this bill.
