Monsey Voting Sites Swamped on Election Day: COC Calls for Change

Following Election Day, the Community Outreach Center (COC) received numerous phone calls from constituents reporting long wait times at Monsey polling locations.
"Our community has seen remarkable growth in recent years," Rabbi Hersh Horowitz, Executive Director of the COC, noted. "Critical issues such as homeowner taxes and education have inspired greater voter participation."
In fact, this past October, the COC's voter registration drive successfully assisted over 1,800 individuals in completing their registration forms, highlighting the community's commitment to civic engagement.
However, on Election Day, many voters were discouraged by the overwhelming crowds and excessive wait times. A post-election review revealed that, for instance, the average wait time at 229 Maple Avenue in Monsey was 30 minutes, with some reporting that it exceeded an hour toward the end of the day.
In response, the COC drafted a letter to the Rockland County Board of Elections emphasizing the need for a more efficient electoral process that respects voters' time. The letter articulated that long wait times can deter participation, undermining the democratic process.
The COC called for a thorough review of polling sites in central Monsey, particularly those impacted by population growth. It urged for the "addition of more polling stations or, at minimum, a substantial increase in staffing at existing voting sites."
The COC expressed its readiness to discuss solutions.
