Monsey Memories: Even Hapinah of the Breslover Shtiebel on Main Street

70 Main Street in Monsey has served as the home of the Breslover Shtiebel in Monsey—a legendary outpost for Torah, tefillah, and avodas Hashem in the unique Breslover derech—for more than four decades. This makes it one of Monsey’s oldest still-functioning shtieblach.  

The shul was founded by a handful of Breslover Monsey families in the early 1980’s and they soon embarked on a building project to erect a shul that would serve them and their families. 

Among the early mispapelim were: The legendary Reb Chaim Beirach Rubinson and his sons Reb Pinchas and Reb Aaron Yosef; R’ Doniel Bergstein; R’ Yidel Lichter; Rav Shmuel Yehuda Landesman; R’ Yitzchok Shaul Harkavy; R’ Yaakov Dovid Rosenberg; R’ Yaakov Moshe Rosen; R’ Moshe Lefkowitz; R’ Yitzchok Eizik Gestetner; R’ Yehuda Aryeh Goldring; R’ Yaakov Mordechai Buskila; R’ Malkiel Zubali; R’ Hillel Hakohen Hecht; Rav Mendel Morris; R’ Nosson Haberfeld; R; Avrohom Woldiger; R’ Ephraim Weiss; R’ Michoel Dahan; R’ Dovid Klein; R’ Yisroel Rabinovitch; R’ Yaakov Horowitz, and others. 

The ensuing years made this Shul a well-known outpost for tefillah with deveikus and joy—a place where chassidim came together to serve their Creator in the unique pathway bequeathed to them by their Rebbe, zy”a.  

This week came the news that after four decades at this location—mispalelim bid farewell to the Shul as they prepare to erect a magnificent new edifice on the very same spot that has served multiple generations of Breslover chassidim in Monsey for forty years. 

Very soon, the kehillah will have a new shul for a new generation—built upon the foundations of the old, carrying them forward to serve future generations of Breslov in Monsey.
