Hudson River Names New Boat to Monitor Water Quality of Hudson River

by M.C. Millman

Riverkeeper announced the naming of its new boat, which will be used to further the organization's mission to protect and restore the Hudson River from source to sea and safeguard drinking water supplies through advocacy rooted in community partnerships, science, and law.

The new vessel, named Bob Boyle, is a refurbished 25' Parker with a Yamaha engine.  It was named in honor of the late Bob Boyle, Riverkeeper's founder. It is a welcome addition to Riverkeeper's fleet and will increase its capacity to monitor water quality on the Hudson River.

Riverkeeper monitors water quality at hundreds of locations on the Hudson River and its tributaries, from New York City to the Adirondacks. Water samples are tested at Riverkeeper's Kingston, New York lab and can also be tested onboard the Bob Boyle, which has been outfitted with water quality monitoring equipment.

"The Riverkeeper water quality monitoring program came out of a demand from the public to know, how's the water?" says Riverkeeper Boat Captain and Vice President of Advocacy John Lipscomb. "Since 2008, we've been answering that question with rigorous testing. The Bob Boyle allows us to dig even further into that work and dedicate more resources to our ongoing river patrols."
