Hochul Announces Plans For New Nuclear Plant Following Closure Of Indian Point In Westchester

During a press conference on Monday morning, Governor Hochul announced plans for a new nuclear plant to be built in upstate New York.
The project would be the first nuclear plant to be built in New York in a generation, and comes only four years after the Indian Point nuclear plant in Westchester was closed down due to concerns that it was contaminating the Hudson River. Indian Point was decommissioned over the last few years, and the plant's siren system was shut down only a year ago. At one point the plant provided power to a quarter of New York, and the state has struggled to compensate for the lost energy.
Hochul has directed the Power Authority to locate a site for the new plant, which will generate energy to power a million homes. According to Hochul, this move is necessary to provide reliability to the state's energy supply and meet the demand.
“If we don't increase our capacity over the next decade we will see rolling blackouts,” Hochul said. “We must radically increase supply. This is the best technology to meet this demand.”
