Rockland County Law Enforcement Leaders Return from Israel After Security Seminar Is Cancelled

On Friday, October 6th, 2023, a delegation of 24 law enforcement leaders from the NYC area arrived in Israel. The group included staff from the New York Police Department and police departments in Rockland County, Long Island, and Westchester County. The intended purpose of this program, which Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs arranged, was to share practical approaches to the challenges of terrorism and antisemitism. The trip itinerary originally included seminars and meetings with Israeli security leaders as well as visits to historical and holy sites.

Due to the rocket and terrorist attacks that began on Shabbos across the country, the decision was made early Sunday morning to return the members of the delegation to New York to allow Israeli security forces to focus on ongoing threats and maintain the delegation's security. At this time, all members are safely back in the New York area.

The Community Security Initiative (CSI) of New York and the Community Security Service (CSS) organized the trip. Staff members from these organizations accompanied the law enforcement delegation and worked directly with our Israeli hosts to coordinate logistics and ensure the group's safety.

The following personnel from Rockland County were included on the trip: Ethan Erlich, Regional Security Director for the Community Security Initiative/Jewish Federation of Rockland County; Chief Marty Reilly, Ramapo Police Department; Chief Jeff Wanamaker, Clarkstown Police Department; Chief Donald Butterworth, Orangetown Police Department, Chief Richard Oleszczuk, Spring Valley Police Department, Chief of Detectives Pete Walker, Rockland County District Attorneys Office, and Chief of Police Division Theodore Brovarski from the Rockland County Sheriffs Office.

The Community Security Initiative is a comprehensive program to protect and enhance the security of the Jewish communities and institutions of New York City, Long Island, Westchester, and Rockland County. The Community Security Service trains community members in basic security procedures to serve as volunteers and work with local law enforcement to help protect Jewish institutions and events. CSI and CSS work together to support New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, and Rockland Jewish communities. Their goal is to enhance the security of the 2400 Jewish institutions and 1.6 million Jewish New Yorkers in the nine-county region by improving the physical security of institutions, providing staff and community training, training and deploying volunteer security teams, providing threat intelligence, assisting with grant applications and enabling or enhancing connectivity with local law enforcement partners.
