Hillcrest Fire Company Conducts Fire and Rescue Training Session Utilizing Actual Building in New Square

The Hillcrest Fire Company volunteer firefighters participated in a fire and rescue training exercise utilizing an apartment building in New Square, which was slated for demolition.
The training took place on Monday night, September 19. Hillcrest Fire Company Captain Ben-Jacob planned the session. Columbian Engine Co. #1 and Spring Valley Hook & Ladder CO. #1 members were invited to participate as well.
After being informed by the New Square Community Planning and Development Board of the opportunity for firefighters to utilize an apartment complex within New Square that is scheduled to be torn down, the Hillcrest Fire Department prepared a training session. The exercise included breaching doors, setting up ladders, and cutting through roofs for ventilation. All of these skills can be critical when it comes to an actual structure fire, so being able to practice on a building where the damage was inconsequential was appreciated.
New Square Emergency services provided support and coordinated the scene allowing the fire departments to conduct the training exercise safely.
“Yesterday’s training was the first in a series of trainings in which we will be utilizing the structure to practice on before it’s torn down,” Captain Orin Ben-Jacob shares with Rockland Daily. “Due to our ongoing strong relationship with the Village of New Square, they thought of us, and we jumped at the opportunity for our volunteers to avail themselves of working on a real structure. Being able to coordinate the joint effort was something we all appreciate.”
The Hillcrest Fire Company also plans on holding a community fire education event for New Square children now that their interest has been piqued by seeing the fire trucks, the increased activity, and the firefighters in action at the apartment complex.
In addition, the Hillcrest Fire Company’s Open House event is planned for Hoshanah Rabah Sunday, October 16, at the firehouse on 374 North Main street. The annual event will be free to all ages and will provide a way for the community to learn what the fire department does and gain knowledge regarding fire safety. There will be activities and giveaways throughout the day.
