Good News for Yeshivas in Newly Proposed NYS Executive Budget
Agudath Israel shared the good news for yeshivas and schools resulting from the new Executive Budget released by Governor Kathy Hochul.
The proposed budget allocates $239 million for Mandated Services Aid (MSA). MSA is the largest source of state funding for non-public schools, providing close to $200 million annually.
Last year, there was a shortfall of close to $8 million for the 2021-22 school year, resulting in a 4% funding cut to all schools. A similar, if not larger, cut is anticipated for the 2022-23 school year, as the budget passed last April only contained a minimal increase.
But this year's proposed budget increase should be sufficient to compensate for the two-year shortfall, as well as completely cover the current 2023-2024 school year.
This week's budget is only a proposal. As such, it must be voted on by both houses of the legislature by April 1.
