Man Fleeing Police Safely Rescued from Jump Attempt on Bear Mountain Bridge

By Rockland Daily Staff
A tense situation on the Bear Mountain Bridge ended safely on Wednesday afternoon thanks to the coordinated efforts of the New York State Police and the Westchester County Police Emergency Service Unit.
Authorities say the incident began around 12:50 p.m. when a man, reportedly fleeing from police in Orange County, exited his vehicle and climbed onto the exterior structure of the bridge. New York State Police negotiators engaged the individual and successfully de-escalated the situation, ultimately persuading him to accept help.
Westchester’s ESU deployed ladders and a high-angle rope rescue system to retrieve the man from a precarious position on the bridge’s outer platform and vertical stanchion. He was safely brought back over the railing and transported to a local hospital for evaluation and care.
Officials praised the collaboration between the agencies, crediting their teamwork with the safe resolution of the potentially life-threatening incident.
