This Sky is the Limit - Plans for Sky Cruise that never Lands Take Off

A nuclear-powered flying hotel with the ability to stay airborne for years at a time could change the face of travel.

The Sky Cruise will potentially have the capacity for 5,000 guests who will arrive by passenger plane to enjoy a vacation where traveling to the destination is part of the experience, as docking ports will allow airplanes to come and go.

The Sky Cruise vision was created by Berlin-based science fan and video producer Hashem Al-Ghaili who created his realistic vision of the Sky Cruise from a concept that originated from artist Tony Holmsten.

“I believe the current flying experience has become tiresome and outdated, and it’s time for new innovations that can make our flight experience more comfortable. Hence, I imagined a world where flying from one place to another turned into a joyous experience rather than fighting for leg space,” says Al-Ghaili in a statement he shared with the South West News Service.

“I was searching for a 3D model that features a futuristic design of an airplane and came across this 3D model by Alexander Tujicov. It’s based on an earlier design created several years ago by Tony Holmsten,” he continues. “I bought the 3D model and decided to animate it. I wrote the script and edited the video to showcase what it could look like in real life.”

The present plan models Sky Cruise after traditional ocean cruise ships. Guests will stay in the onboard hotels and enjoy the 360-degree panoramic platform, shopping malls, entertainment deck, fitness center, swimming pools, restaurants, bars, playgrounds, medical centers,  live shows, and cinemas. There will be venues for weddings, business events, and meetings.

Some of the project naysayers have cited issues they feel will crop up with the ship's ability to take off. They also question how maintenance issues will be managed from that height. Additionally, the economic viability of such a venture is questionable, given how prohibitive the cost will be for most would-be travelers, as the Sky Cruise price will likely only be within reach of the most affluent prospective passengers.

But Al-Ghaili believes the Sky Cruise could become a reality before 2040 once there is a way to create sufficient energy for take-off through nuclear energy generated from powerful nuclear reactors small enough to fit inside the ship.
