Spring Trout Fishing Season Starts in Hudson Valley
By Rockland Daily Staff
April 1 marks the official start date of spring trout fishing season in the Hudson Valley. Although only catch-and-release is allowed most of the year, April to early June is harvest season.
The Department of Environmental Conservation will be stocking trout in streams and ponds across the state (stocking is the practice of releasing artificially raised fish into natural bodies of water to supplement wildlife in the water.) Over 2 million trout will be released, exciting local and aspiring fishermen.
"The mild winter afforded New Yorkers some trout fishing opportunities during the catch-and-release season," DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said in a statement. "However, April 1, the traditional opening day of inland trout fishing season, brings the excitement to another level as spring arrives and the state’s streams and ponds are stocked to provide additional opportunities for anglers."
