Rockland County Department of Health Warns About Tick Season

By Idy Perl
Tick season has officially begun and the Rockland County Department of Health is urging local residents to take proactive steps to prevent tick bites. Not all ticks carry disease, and not every tick bite causes illness. However, it's important to know how to prevent bites, safely remove ticks, and what to do in case of infection.
When enjoying the outdoors, avoid contact with ticks by:
- Staying on clear, well traveled trails
- Walking in the center of trails
- Avoiding dense woods and bushy areas
- Not sitting directly on the ground
Do a full clothing and body check after spending time outdoors and brush off any ticks that are not attached to clothes or skin. If an attached tick is found promptly remove it with tweezers. Pull the tick straight out in a steady, upward motion without twisting or turning it. The chance of infection is much lower if the tick is removed within two hours.
If flu-like symptoms or a bullseye shaped rash develop shortly after, contact a doctor immediately.
Have a safe and healthy summer!
