Readers Write: Far From Egg-cellent
Birds of a feather flock together - which means I joined the crowd and went shopping yesterday. Speaking of birds, seems to me that what I saw when I compared prices of some of the local grocery stores I visited was just plain wrong!
I'm talking about that staple item we all have to buy around this time of year - and let me tell you - nowhere was it even remotely cheaper by the dozen. As a matter of fact, egg prices fell 6.7% in February, according to Consumer Price Index data released last week (after egg prices jumped every month starting in October) so February's reported drop allowed us all to heave a great sigh of relief. Even if we still had to pay 55% more than we did a year ago, at least hope was in the air. And that was what I thought as well - until I went shopping and now I have a word for the wise, or two words to be exact. Compare prices! For real - it's going to make a difference. Take it from me - a real mother hen type eager to take you under my wing to share this much-needed shopping tip.
Let me just clarify by saying I didn't blame groceries for raising prices when the rest of the nation was doing the same, but to falsely inflate prices just so your store can take advantage of this most egg-cellent season is just plain wrong - kinda like a fox let loose in the henhouse to make the most of the situation.
Let's get crackin!
