The New York Blood Center has declared a blood emergency following a holiday season of low donor turnout and recent inclement winter weather.
Five thousand fewer blood donors have come forward than the average for this time of year resulting in a 25% drop in donations in the last three weeks.
Blood donations can be made every 56 days and up to six times a year.
