Holtec International's recent announcement regarding expediating the dumping of a million gallons of radioactive wastewater into the Hudson River from August to May, as reported by Rockland Daily here has been delayed.
Rockland County elected officials and residents vehemently protested the move by Holtec. The company now claims to be in discussions with federal and state agencies about the process for moving forward.
"After speaking with Holtec Representatives tonight," Congressman Mike Lawler tweeted on Thursday night, "I'm happy to announce they will be halting the expedited discharge of radioactive wastewater into the Hudson River. It is important that they meet with all Federal, State, and local officials to discuss alternatives to the plan."
"I'm relieved," Rockland County Executive Ed Day says in a statement released on Thursday evening, "to hear reported from Federal lawmakers that Holtec has canceled their expeditated plan to dump 1 million gallons of toxic waste into the Hudson River in early May... I continue to urge the EPA, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and our State and Federal Elected officials to continue standing united against eh company dumping radioactive waste linked to cancer into our waterways."
