Congressman Lawler Speaks in Support of Yeshivas During National School Choice Week
by M.C. Millman
Congressman Mike Lawler addressed Congress during National School Choice week, offering his support of school choice in general and yeshivas in particular.
School choice means giving parents access to the best K-12 education options for their children. The options can encompass traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online learning, and homeschooling. National School Choice Week helps create awareness of these options.
"As we recognize school choice week," Lawler said during his delivery, "I think it's important to recognize the quality of education that's provided in our public schools, yes, but in our private schools, our religious schools, our parochial, and yeshivas. They provide an important, an important education."
The speech earned a flurry of approval on Twitter.
"Thank you, Congressman @lawler4ny," Yeruchim Silber, Director of New York Government Relations at Agudath Israel of America, tweeted this morning, "for standing up and recognizing yeshivas on the floor of the US Congress."
"During #NationalSchoolChoiceWeek," Rabbi A.D. Motzen, National Director of Government Affairs, Agudath Israel of America, tweeted, "we recognize and celebrate the many excellent options parents have to educate their children, including #Yeshiva Thank you, @RepMikeLawler."
"I'm a product of public schools," the congressman tweeted. "My sister-in-law is a special education teacher in the very district I graduated from. I respect and admire our teachers. But we must ensure that every child has access to a quality education and that parents have a say."
