Beware of the Bear!

By M. C. Millman
Rockland homeowners have been sharing countless bear sightings within many Greater Monsey neighborhoods, including Pomona and Monsey.
There have also been multiple sightings of black bears in Nanuet and Central Nyack, according to the Clarkstown Police Department.
Once on the scene after a call, officers will monitor the bears' movements as long as necessary.
Tips for those who encounter a bear are, first and foremost, to remain calm. Remember that the bear is likely more scared of you than you are of it and that black bear attacks on people are rare. To easily scare away a black bear, use the following approach outlined by the Humane Society of the United States.
- Stand and face the bear directly. Never run away from or approach the bear.
- Make yourself look as big as possible by spreading your arms or, better yet, a coat.
- Make as much noise as possible by yelling, banging pots and pans, or using other noisemaking devices.
- If the bear approaches and you have bear spray, spray the bear as it approaches.
- In the rare case that a black bear attacks you, fight back (don't play dead).
- After the bear leaves, remove whatever attracted him to the location (barbecue grill, bird feeder, pet food, or garbage).
