55 Years Ago: A Giant Leap For Mankind
By Idy Perl
“Beautiful view. Magnificent desolation.”
Those were the first words uttered by Buzz Aldrin, one of the astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission, the first crew to land humans on the moon.
Earlier this week was the 55th anniversary of the first moon landing. On July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were the first humans to land on the moon. When Armstrong stepped out onto the moon, he uttered the now famous line, ““That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.”
The astronauts spent over 20 hours on the moon collecting samples and taking photos for scientific research. They also stuck an American flag into the ground of the moon and took the iconic photo of Aldrin standing next to it.
