This Sunday: Brinks Memorial Ceremony

By Idy Perl
On October 20th, 1981, members of the Black Liberation Army and the former Weather Underground, a violent group that promoted social change, committed the infamous Brinks robbery and related murders in Nyack, a tragedy that shook the community at the time.
The BLA members carried out the robbery, which entailed stealing $1.6 million from a Brinks armored truck at the Nanuet National Bank in the Nanuet Mall, while the Underground members were the designated getaway drivers.
During the robbery they killed one Brinks security guard and seriously injured another two. While trying to escape the police, they killed two Nyack police officers and wounded a detective.
A memorial service will be held this upcoming Sunday, October 20th, on Mountainview Avenue in Nyack, near the entrance to the NYS Thruway.
