Senator Weber Applauds Passage of Cochlear Impant Bill in New York Legislature

Vital legislation passed in the New York State Senate last week and Assembly this week that ensures continued hearing access for individuals who rely on cochlear implants. Senator Weber, along with the bill's primary senate sponsor, Senator Sam Sutton, continue to advocate for individuals facing insurance barriers to receiving necessary backups for these hearing devices.
"Last June, with only a few days left in session, I met with several families in my district office and heard the challenges they faced as parents of children with cochlear implants," said Senator Weber. "These wonderful devices truly are a miracle, giving people with hearing impairments the ability to hear."
Under current insurance policies, patients are often left without coverage for backup or replacement cochlear devices during upgrades or malfunctions—which typically occur every 3 to 5 years. Without a functioning device, patients—especially children—may go hours without hearing while waiting for a single device to recharge or be repaired. "Some families who can't afford to immediately purchase a backup device were forced to not hear for hours each day while waiting for their one working device to recharge," Senator Weber explained.
He added, "When insurance companies denied the requests made by parents, the denial letters said they were simply following state guidelines. Thankfully, as legislators, we are in a position to modify those guidelines and require insurance companies to cover the cost of replacement devices when they malfunction or become obsolete."
"Many thanks to Assemblyman Aron Wieder for championing this bill in the State Assembly and getting it across the finish line," Senator Weber added.
"I believe every cochlear recipient should have access to sound at all times—and I'm proud to say that with the passing of this legislation, that goal is more attainable than ever," Senator Weber concluded.
The bill will now go to the Governor's desk for her signature, delivering long-overdue relief and support for New Yorkers with hearing impairments.
