Rockland County Offering Free Lead Training
By Idy Perl
Rockland County is now offering a free Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) training for contractors, homeowners, landlords, property managers and tenants, so they can become lead-safe certified contractors.
Structures built before 1978 are likely to contain lead due to lead-based paint that was used at the time. Construction work done in those structures can create dangerous lead dust, which is why federal law requires all RPP projects done in homes or buildings built before 1978 to be done by lead-safe certified contractors.
In addition, in 2023 New York State adopted the Lead Rental Registry (LRR) law, which will require property owners of rental buildings in the 10977 zip code that have 2 or more units and were built before 1980 to register their property with a rental registry and have a lead hazard inspection every 3 years. The Rockland County Dept. of Health will begin inspecting these units later this year to ensure they're lead free and safe. Any RPP work will need to be done by a certified contractor as well, but the property managers or owners can now attend the free lead training class as well so that they can do repairs on their own.
