Record Voting Numbers Out Of Rockland
By Idy Perl
After a long and dramatic election cycle Donald Trump has been named the Presidential-Elect after winning 277 electoral votes and the popular vote, with over 71 million votes that have been counted so far. This is the first time since George W. Bush in 2008 that a Republican has won the popular vote as well.
This election saw a historic increase in the local Jewish vote which contributed to Rockland County going red, even though Rockland usually goes to the Democrats in presidential elections. Trump won Rockland with 80,896 votes, an astounding 16 thousand more than Harris, who got 63,151.
Additionally, New Square actually broke their record for the most votes ever cast during an election. This high turnout proves what a power the community's vote has.
The breakdown of the New Square votes is as follows:
- Trump received 3,456 votes as compared to a measly 12 votes that went to Harris.
- Lawler received 3,421 while Jones received 23.
- Melnick received 3,191 and Weber got 207.
- Wieder received 3,376 votes and McGowan got only 55.
Last night Kamala Harris canceled a scheduled speech at Howard University once the tides started turning to Trump. She is expected to call Trump later today to concede the race and will deliver her concession speech at 6pm.
