Traffic Alert: Major Route 9W Construction for CHPE Project Will Effect Route 9W
by M.C. Millman
Beginning tomorrow, Thursday, August 1, residents and businesses of the Towns of Stony Point, Haverstraw, and Clarkstown will see significant construction on Route 9W.
The Champlain Hudson Power Express Project (CHPE) is a 339-mile powerline that will transmit hydroelectric power originating in Canada, which will run through Rockland County on its way to Queens, as reported by Rockland Daily here. The installation will affect the main 9W corridor round the clock for seven days a week for an unspecified amount of time.
CHPE is expected to deliver 1,250 megawatts of renewable hydroelectric energy to New York City. The power line will pass through fifteen New York counties. Originating in Quebec, the powerline will run under Lake Champlain and the Hudson River below Greene County and resurface in Rockland County, running through the towns of Stony Point, Clarkstown, and Haverstraw before re-entering the Hudson River. The line will finally connect to the Astoria Annex GIS Substation in Bronx County owned by NYPA.
Noise and lighting mitigation measures will be utilized by CHPE to minimize the impact on nearby residents and sensitive receptors, although some temporary disruptions are still highly likely.
For any questions about the project, CHPE has established a toll-free number: 1-800-991-CHPE (2473).
