Tilcon Factory Fire Extinguished Using 9,000-Gallon Tankers
by M.C. Millman
Yesterday's fire at the Tilcon New York quarry and asphalt plant in Haverstraw, as reported by Rockland Daily here, required two 9,000-gallon water tankers to extinguish.
Firefighters reported that as there weren't any fire hydrants close enough to the factory, they had to fill two 9,000-galloon tankers to battle the flames instead.
Investigations showed that the fire started along the conveyor belt, which brings materials into a crusher tower. The tower was completely destroyed in the flames.
The fire created smoke thick enough that people could see it from a distance in Rockland as well as across the Hudson River.
All employees were safely accounted for, although one firefighter suffered a minor injury after battling the flames.
