Child Saved From Hot Car In The Nick Of Time

By Idy Perl
As another heat wave passes through the tri-state area, more
heartbreaking stories of children being left in cars are being reported.
Earlier this week the Jewish community was heartbroken to hear
that a young child in Lakewood passed after being left in a hot car. Today, Clarkstown Police broke the window of a car parked in the Costco parking lot to rescue a child
that was left inside. Hatzalah, Chaveirim and Nanuet EMS were on scene and treated the child,
who is thankfully in stable condition.
Many may not realize, but even on mild or cloudy days the temperature
inside a vehicle can reach life-threatening levels extremely quickly. Even more
so on hot days like we’re experiencing now, with temperatures outside reaching
the 90s, the inside of a car will quickly become dangerously hot, even when the
windows are slightly open. Leaving a child alone even for two minutes can be
life threatening.
The National Safety Council encourages parents and
caregivers to get into a routine when exiting their car and to avoid
distractions, like phones, in order to reduce the chance of forgetting their
child in the backseat. They advise parents to place an important item like a
second shoe or a purse in the backseat so there should be another reason to check
the back before exiting.
The large poster has been set up at the entrance of the Kosher Hive with important safety reminders, including not leaving children in cars.
Wishing everyone a healthy and safe summer!
