The Tent Comes Down: Turning the Page on an Era in New Square
By Rockland Daily Staff
A familiar New Square landmark is coming down, as crews have begun the process of dismantling the massive tent infrastructure near the central Bhm"d, bringing an end to a structure that played a major role in the kehila for years.
The enormous tent was originally erected as a temporary solution while the magnificent new central Bhm"d was under construction. It ultimately served for five full years as one of the kehila’s main gathering places.
From Tishen and major events to grand weddings and other gatherings, thousands upon thousands passed through the tent over those years, making the temporary structure a familiar part of life in New Square.
Following the opening of the new Bhm"d, the tent was no longer needed for gatherings. Its material covering was removed, while the massive metal framework remained standing. The area beneath it was subsequently converted into a large parking lot serving mispallelim at the central Bhm"d, as first reported by Rockland Daily.
Now, the remaining structure is being removed altogether as New Square prepares for another major construction project in the area.
As previously reported by Rockland Daily, the kehila is preparing to demolish the large old Bhm"d and construct a major new complex in its place, featuring a Heichel HaTishen and Heichel HaTorah.
The dismantling of the tent infrastructure clears the way for the upcoming work, while also bringing to a close a memorable chapter in New Square - five years during which a structure built as a temporary solution became the setting for countless major moments in the kehila.
