Tappan Fire Department Conducts Training Exercise at Vacant Home Set for Demolition

The Tappan Fire Department recently took part in a hands-on training exercise at a home scheduled to be demolished, giving crews a valuable opportunity to sharpen critical emergency response skills.

The training, held Sunday, March 1, brought together firefighters and emergency responders for a full morning of drills designed to simulate real-life fireground situations. The exercise also served as a chance for newer probationary firefighters in the Tappan Fire Department to put the skills they have been learning into practice while more experienced members refreshed key techniques.

During the training, crews practiced hoseline advancements, search operations, pumping operations, and a firefighter-down mayday scenario, all within the structure slated for demolition.

The exercise was conducted alongside mutual aid partners from the Old Tappan Fire Department and South Orangetown Ambulance, allowing responders from multiple agencies to train together and strengthen coordination during emergency situations.

Officials say training opportunities inside structures scheduled for demolition are especially valuable, providing realistic conditions that help firefighters prepare for emergencies they may encounter in the field.
