Hazardous Potholes in West Nyack Cause Tire Blowouts, Lane Closure Ordered

By Rockland Daily Staff

Local officials are responding to growing concerns over severe potholes along Route 303 in West Nyack, which have reportedly caused tire blowouts and damage to numerous vehicles in recent days.

Authorities say residents have been contacting local offices for several days about the deteriorating road conditions. Drivers reported issues including popped tires, damaged wheels, and other vehicle damage, with some cars requiring towing.

According to officials, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) had been using cold patch to temporarily fill the potholes. However, the repairs proved ineffective due to rain and heavy traffic, causing the potholes to quickly reopen.

Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann visited the location along with Clarkstown Police Department Sergeant Stapleton to assess the situation. Officials requested that the right lane be closed until a more durable repair could be completed.

Following discussions with State Senator Bill Weber and NYSDOT officials, including Assistant Deputy Commissioner Jim Rukas and the Region 8 NYSDOT Director, the state agreed to close the right lane and perform permanent repairs using hot asphalt.

The repair work is expected to take place Monday.

Officials are also urging state representatives to address the issue and consider solutions for the vehicle damage reported by drivers over the past week.

Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to report potholes on state highways by calling the NYS DOT hotline at 1-800-POT-HOLE (1-800-768-4653) so crews can respond more quickly to dangerous road conditions.
