Find a Fawn - Leave it to Nature

Find a Fawn - Leave it to Nature

By Rockland Daily Staff

The Town of Ramapo Police Department reminds residents that finding a fawn alone does not mean it has been abandoned and the fawn should be left untouched.

Each year, in late May and early June, the Ramapo Police Department shares that it receives calls about fawns in distress.

"It is important for all to realize that deer do not abandon their young," the police department states. "Fawns, like many other wild animal babies, are frequently hidden and left alone for hours by their mothers while they forage for food. For the first couple of weeks, these babies generally nap while waiting for their mothers to return. They lay very still so as not to attract predators (like well-intentioned humans), and are frequently mistaken for being in distress or abandoned. One sign that they are well hydrated is if their ears are perked up."

If the fawn is left alone for a significant amount of time, there might be an issue, but giving the mother deer a chance to return to her untouched baby is the best way to keep the fawns safe.
