Annual Burn Ban Goes Into Effect in Rockland County

Annual Burn Ban Goes Into Effect in Rockland County

By Y.M. Lowy

The annual burn ban is almost going into effect across Rockland County and the rest of New York State as officials warn of an increased risk of spring wildfires.

From March 16 through May 14, residents are prohibited from burning vegetation and brush. The seasonal ban is put in place each year as warming temperatures, lower humidity, and dry vegetation exposed by melting snow create conditions that can allow fires to spread quickly.

While the open burning of tree limbs and branches is not allowed, small outdoor grills and campfires are still permitted, provided they are less than three feet in height and four feet in length.

Officials urge residents to follow the restrictions and take precautions during the spring months, when wildfire risk across the state is at its highest.
