Wrong-Way Crash on I-87 Leaves One Dead,

At approximately 3:01 a.m., State Police from Troop T Zone 1 responded to reports of a motor vehicle crash involving a wrong-way driver. The preliminary investigation, conducted by members of Troop T Uniform, Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), and Troop F Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU), determined the following:
A 2024 Subaru WRX, operated by Brian P. Tortora, age 33, of New York, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-87. In the area of Mile Marker 18.9—less than a quarter mile west of Exit 12—Tortora’s vehicle struck a 2017 Volvo truck towing a trailer, operated by Roberto A. Rondon-Fleites, age 52.
Following the initial collision, the Subaru was then struck by a 2016 Freightliner, towing a trailer, operated by Wilber M. Ramos, age 27. The Freightliner subsequently collided with the Volvo truck before coming to rest.
Mr. Tortora, the sole occupant of the Subaru, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Mr. Rondon-Fleites was transported to Nyack Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Mr. Ramos was not injured. All three drivers were the only occupants in their respective vehicles.
The scene was processed by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
This investigation remains ongoing.
