Water Main Replacement Project Underway on Mountain Avenue
By Y.M. Lowy
The Town of Ramapo Highway Department, in coordination with the Viola Water Company, has begun a major water main replacement project on Mountain Avenue.
Work started Monday, October 20, at the intersection of College Road and Mountain Avenue and will move toward Hilltop Place. Beginning October 25, crews will also start replacing the main on Nelson Road, between Highview Road and Mountain Avenue.
The project includes installing a new 16-inch water main that will run from College Road to West Maple Avenue. The upgraded line is expected to significantly improve water pressure throughout the area, a long-requested improvement supported by the Town Supervisor.
The work is expected to take about six weeks to complete. During this time, Mountain Avenue will be closed to traffic on weekdays from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Detours will be clearly marked, and drivers are asked to follow signs.
Officials noted that there will be no interruption of water service to individual homes during the project, as crews are only replacing the main line. Each day after work concludes around 4:00 p.m., the roadway will be backfilled, covered with plates, and fully reopened overnight until work resumes the next morning.
