The Town of Ramapo Highway Department has been actively carrying out traffic safety improvements across unincorporated Ramapo in recent days, installing new stop signs and crosswalks to improve pedestrian and traffic safety.

At the intersection of West Central Avenue and Adar Court, the Highway Department installed new all-way stop signs along with crosswalks. Both the stop signs and the crosswalks are equipped with LED flashing lights to increase visibility for drivers, particularly during nighttime hours and in heavier traffic conditions.

Along Old Nyack Turnpike and Hammond Street, the Highway Department has installed new crosswalks with bright LED lights to increase visibility for oncoming traffic, as Old Nyack Turnpike has seen many close calls at that location.

Town of Ramapo Highway Superintendent Fred Brinn said the work is part of a broader push to improve safety across the town. “In its continuing efforts to improve pedestrian safety and traffic safety, the Town of Ramapo Board in conjunction with the Highway Department installed new stop signs on Adar and West Central,” he said. “The Highway Department has been very busy lately installing various traffic safety signage such as stop signs with LED lights and pedestrian crosswalks with LED lights in areas of high traffic volume. The town has been very aggressive in implementing traffic safety, and we’ve been busy carrying out that plan by doing installations across unincorporated Ramapo.”

Brinn added that West Central Avenue was identified as an area where both traffic flow and pedestrian safety had become concerns, leading to the approval of the new stop signs and crosswalks. He also noted that Old Nyack Turnpike sees significant traffic volume, making the addition of a crosswalk with enhanced visibility at Hammond Street an important safety measure.

As part of the ongoing effort, the Highway Department has also been installing no-parking signs on select local streets within unincorporated Ramapo to improve traffic flow, particularly during busy times when parking on both sides of the street can interfere with bus movement.

Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht said the improvements follow engineering reviews and feedback from residents. “As part of our ongoing pedestrian safety plan, we have installed stop signs and crosswalks on West Central Avenue by Adar Court and on Old Nyack Turnpike and Hammond Street following our engineer’s review of those intersections in response to concerns raised by residents,” he said. “I’d like to thank Highway Superintendent Brinn and his crew for their great work installing these improvements and enhancing our community’s safety.”

Town officials said additional traffic safety measures may continue in other areas as part of the broader initiative.
