Ramapo High School Stages Powerful DWI Safety Presentation
YS GOLD and Yisroel R.
The quiet stretch of Viola Road near Ramapo High School became the scene of a sobering lesson today as students witnessed a multi-agency DWI safety presentation designed to illustrate the catastrophic stakes of impaired driving. Town of Ramapo police, Monsey Fire Department, Spring Hill emergency medical services, and the Rockland County Medical Examiners office converged on the campus to stage a realistic crash site, using the "Jaws of Life" to extract student actors from mangled vehicles. Monsey Fire Communications ran all dispatching operations at the workshop. Monsey Rest and Comfort Unit (RAC) provided rehab services for all participants.
The heavy silence of the student body reflected the gravity of the scene, which served as a visceral reminder that a single night of poor judgment can lead to a lifetime of consequences.
The demonstration extended beyond the physical wreckage and into the legal aftermath of a collision while intoxication.
Judge Alan Strauss presided over a mock arraignment on-site, stripping away any illusions of leniency by detailing the severe legal implications of a DWI, including potential imprisonment and a permanent criminal record.
By witnessing the blend of emergency response and judicial reality, students were confronted with the devastating ripple effect that one decision has on families, first responders, and on street safety.
The demonstration left a strong impression on the students, giving them a clearer understanding of the real-life consequences of impaired driving. By seeing the simulated crash scene and hearing directly from first responders, many students walked away with a deeper sense of responsibility and awareness that will stay with them beyond the classroom.
Appreciation goes to all of the above-mentioned agencies and personnel who dedicated their time and effort to make the program possible, beginning early in the morning at 8:00 a.m. and continuing through 1:00 p.m. Their commitment to educating young people and promoting safety played a key role in delivering a meaningful and impactful experience.
