Toll Trouble for Rockland

By Y.M. Lowy
A judge has rejected Rockland County’s attempt to halt the MTA’s congestion pricing plan, a toll that will charge drivers entering Manhattan’s busiest streets.
County Executive Ed Day and County Attorney Thomas Humbach didn’t hold back in their response. “This is a setback, but the fight is far from over,” they said, calling the tolls unfair and harmful to Rockland’s residents.
They argued that drivers in Rockland already pay plenty for New York’s transit system while getting little in return. The new tolls, they warned, will squeeze families, small businesses, and workers who depend on their cars, with no real alternatives available.
“This plan treats our community like second-class citizens, and we won’t stand for it,” they said. The county is preparing to appeal, vowing to fight for fairness and equity.
The ruling may have slowed Rockland’s efforts, but it’s clear the battle over congestion pricing is far from over.
