By Idy Perl

Today, the Spring Valley Police released additional information regarding a wild car crash that occured on May 5th involving a local taxi driver.

At around 1:45am the police responded to an accident at 23 Ridge Avenue, and upon arriving at the scene found that a taxi had crashed into a fence. The police spoke with a visibly injured and shaken woman who had been the passenger during the accident. The victim shared that after she was picked up, the driver started driving erratically and refused to allow her to exit the car. The car then crashed into the fence, and the driver allegedly attacked the passenger with a screwdriver and tried to rob her.

After a brief struggle the victim was able to escape the car and call for help. In the meantime, the driver fled the scene and almost caused a collision while running away, but was apprehended by the police only a few minutes later.

Following a detailed investigation by the Spring Valley Detective Bureau, 22-year-old Kevin Mazariego-Figueroa of Ramapo was arrested on May 7. He is now facing multiple felony charges, including Attempted Assault in the 1st Degree, Kidnapping in the 2nd Degree, Robbery in the 1st Degree, Strangulation in the 2nd Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th Degree. He was arraigned before Judge Sweet and remanded to the Rockland County Jail.
