Spring Valley Holds Budget Hearing Tonight as Proposed Plan Includes 12% Tax Increase

The Village of Spring Valley is set to hold a public hearing tonight, April 29, 8:15 pm, at the Spring Valley Village Hall, on the mayor’s tentative 2026–2027 budget, which includes a proposed tax increase of about 12 percent.
Under the current proposal, the village tax rate would rise from roughly $267 to about $301 per $1,000 of assessed value. For example, a home assessed at $25,000 would see its annual village tax increase from about $6,675 to approximately $7,525, an increase of more than $800.
Village officials note that the increase comes after several years of relatively stable taxes. From 2018 through 2024, the village did not raise taxes, and over the past two years increases were limited to about 1.8 percent. Officials also point to rising costs, including a new police contract that is expected to account for a minimum increase of about 4 percent in the budget.
Tonight’s hearing is expected to focus on how to address those rising costs, with discussions on whether adjustments can be made in other areas of the budget and whether the proposed increase should move forward as planned.
In addition to the budget, the Board will also hold a hearing on a local law to override the state tax cap, which would allow the village to exceed the usual limit on tax increases if approved.
Residents will have the opportunity to review the proposal, ask questions, and voice their opinions before any final decisions are made by the Board.
