Slow Down on the Highways: 64 Vehicles Crashed Into Snowplows This Winter
By Y.M. Lowy
Drivers are being warned to be extra careful around snowplows after 64 vehicles have already crashed into NYSDOT plows across the state this winter.
Plows move slowly on purpose while clearing snow and spreading salt, and they often need extra room to maneuver. Many of these crashes happen when drivers come up too fast, tailgate, or try to pass a working plow in bad road conditions.
When a plow is hit, it puts crews and drivers in danger and takes that truck off the road when it’s needed to keep highways safe. It can also lead to serious crashes for the driver involved, since hitting a heavy plow or trying to pass it in bad conditions can quickly turn dangerous.
Transportation officials are reminding drivers that if you see a plow ahead, slow down, keep your distance, and wait until conditions are clear before passing.
