Second Measles Case Reported in Rockland County This Year
By Y.M. Lowy
Rockland County has reported a second case of measles this year. This new case is not connected to a case in August, which was the first in the county in six years.
The patient had recently traveled abroad and went to a healthcare facility after getting a rash. Health officials are now checking anyone who may have been in contact with the person to make sure they are protected.
Measles spreads very easily through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. Most people who are not vaccinated and are exposed to the virus will get sick. Symptoms usually appear about 10 days after exposure and include fever, rash, cough, red or watery eyes, and a runny nose.
Measles can be serious, especially for young children and people with weak immune systems. Complications can include pneumonia, brain infections, and can be fatal in rare cases.
Health officials are asking everyone to make sure they and their families are up to date on their vaccines.
