Rockland Executive Criticizes Decision as Court Upholds Move of Local Elections to Even-Numbered Years
The New York State Court of Appeals has upheld the law moving local elections to even-numbered years, a decision drawing strong criticism from Rockland County Executive Ed Day.
In a statement, Day said the ruling “politically compromises the election law and renders our constitutional right to home rule impotent.” He emphasized that home rule — the ability of local communities to govern themselves — is a cornerstone of democracy.
“It is a sad day for every municipality in New York that values independence, accountability, and the voice of its residents,” Day added.
