Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services Issue Safety Alert on Downed Power Lines
By Yisroel R.
The Rockland County Office of Fire and Emergency Services has issued an important safety message reminding residents how to stay safe when encountering downed power lines. Officials note that during storms or accidents, a fallen wire may remain energized even if it appears inactive, creating a serious risk to anyone nearby.
In their message, officials stress that residents should never touch a downed power line or anything it is touching, including trees, fences, puddles, or vehicles. People should stay at least 30 feet away, warn others to keep their distance, and immediately call 911 along with their utility company. Because wet ground conducts electricity, water around the area should be avoided.
The message also reminds drivers never to drive over a downed wire. If a power line lands on a vehicle, the safest place to remain is inside until emergency personnel arrive. If a fire forces someone to exit, they should try to jump without touching the vehicle and the ground at the same time, then hop or shuffle away to reduce the risk of shock.
The Emergency Management Division stresses that preparation and awareness are essential. Understanding these safety steps can help protect families and neighborhoods during emergencies.
