Public Menorah Lighting in Pomona

Public Menorah Lighting in Pomona

Despite subfreezing temperatures, dozens gathered Sunday afternoon in front of Pomona Village Hall for a public menorah lighting ceremony to celebrate Chanukah.

Organized by local residents, the event united community leaders, elected officials, and attendees in a display of Jewish resilience and solidarity. Among those present were Senator Bill Weber, Assemblyman Aron Wieder, Rockland County DA Tom Walsh, Legislator Paul Cleary, Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, Haverstraw Supervisor Howard Phillips, Council Members Ralph Kirschkel and Johnny Ortiz, Pomona Mayor Ilan Fuchs, Deputy Mayor Mendy Lasker, and Trustee Joel Grunwald.

Rabbi Ari Levitan of K’hal Tiferes Tefillah delivered an inspiring address, followed by brief remarks from other speakers. Supervisor Michael Specht lit the menorah, reciting the traditional blessings.

Special thanks were extended to the Ramapo Police Department and the North Rockland Safety Patrol (NRSP), led by Chief Shimmy Teicher and Captain Joel Newman, for ensuring the event’s safety.

The ceremony highlighted Chanukah’s timeless message of light overcoming darkness and the power of community togetherness.
