Plans for 21-Mile Rockland Riverway Trail Underway

M.C. Millman

Rockland County's latest project involves a potential 21-mile pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists along or near the Hudson River.

The path would span from Palisades, the southernmost portion of Rockland County, to Stony Point, the northernmost portion of the County.

The County is conducting the Rockland Riverway Trail Feasibility Study to "determine the feasibility of constructing the trail for pedestrians and bicyclists by assessing the physical and social characteristics of the proposed alignment options."

The study is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which is committed to protecting the American people from the public health and economic impacts of COVID-19. According to the County, the project would help provide a path to improve local health and quality of life.

"We saw the repercussions COVID-19 had on mental health issues... which is why the County of Rockland is investing in the wellbeing of residents by creating more urban green spaces, including this walk and bike path that will stretch from Palisades to Stony Point," explains County Executive Ed Day. "We invite the public to weigh in on this countywide recreation that will benefit Rocklanders for generations to come."

A public workshop was held earlier this week regarding the project. Another workshop will be held on Thursday, November 16, at Orangetown Town Hall.

In the meantime, Rockland County is accepting comments and ideas on an interactive website here.

The website allows users to provide feedback and ideas by dragging a pin and commenting on specific areas on the map.

"Spending time outside has a positive impact on mental health, and we believe this 21-mile pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists will contribute to improved local health and quality of life," said County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr. "We encourage you to weigh in and help us shape this project for the families calling this County home."

Details on future engagement opportunities on the trail will be announced here.
