The Piermont Fire Department Dive Team marked a major milestone, celebrating 70 years of dedicated service to the community.
Originally founded by seven members, the team has continued to grow and evolve over the decades, carrying forward the commitment and determination that first established the unit. While the original members have since passed away, department officials said their “never give up” attitude continues to guide the dive team today.
In its early years, the dive team operated with limited equipment, responding to emergencies with rubber suits, a single steel tank, and double-hose regulators. Despite the basic gear available at the time, members were able to carry out their missions and assist in water-related emergencies.
Today, the team operates with modern state of the art equipment including full-face masks, dry suits, side-scan sonar, and two boats, significantly expanding their capabilities during search and rescue operations.
Department officials expressed appreciation to local taxpayers and the Piermont Village Board for their ongoing support, noting that the dedication of the dive team’s members remains a key part of the department’s service to the community.
